QBI presents a seminar with Dr. Thuong Nguyen, Associate Professor and Head of the Tuberculosis Group at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam.
Professor Nguyen received a PhD training at OUCRU, Vietnam and postdoctoral training at Cornell University, USA in host genetics and cellular immunity in tuberculosis. She currently holds a Wellcome Trust International Intermediate Fellowship focused on linking human genotype and immunological phenotype to better understand TB pathogenesis using transcriptomics. She has been leading the Tuberculosis Research Group at OUCRU since 2015. The objectives of her group are to improve TB diagnosis and treatment by carrying out clinical trials of new diagnostic tests and therapeutic approaches. The group also aims to understand more about how genetic variations in both host and pathogen influence disease presentations, treatment response and outcomes.
Talk Title: Identification of Human Genetic Determinants of TB Clinical Manifestations, Treatment Responses and Outcomes
In her talk, Dr. Nguyen will provide an overview of the human genetics research on tuberculosis (TB) conducted by the TB group at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam. The focus of this work is to better understand TB susceptibility and pathogenesis with the ultimate goal of improving clinical outcomes. She will also introduce new findings from cellular genome-wide association studies (GWAS), which aim to identify human genetic variants linked to macrophage antimicrobial activity and the clinical manifestations of TB.
