Institut Pasteur - UCSF QBI Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases: Women Fellowship in San Francisco for the Pasteur Network

The Institut Pasteur UCSF-QBI Center of Excellence in Emerging Infectious Diseases, aims to foster collaborations across the biomedical sciences, exploring quantitative methods to address pressing issues in biology of globally (re)emerging pathogens. Driven by its commitment to better human health, the Institut Pasteur UCSF-QBI Center supports research to investigate fundamental biological mechanisms of human infectious diseases.

SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW

One of the major goals of the Institut Pasteur- UCSF QBI Scholarship is to strengthen communication, collaboration and professional development opportunities to further advance research with an outlook on diagnostic, therapeutics and vaccines, specifically for women in biosciences. The Institut Pasteur- UCSF QBI scholarship is offered to female scientists who currently work within a member institution of the Pasteur Network. Note that only one (1) candidate will be selected per 6-month period and that the selection committee will pay extra attention to candidates working in low- and middle-income countries and territories.

We offer a 6-month, non-accredited multidisciplinary scholarship focused on bioscience and infectious disease research at our San Francisco location, based at UCSF. Our scholar will start in the first quarter of the year and will conduct research for 6 months in an area of need, that she can later implement and apply at her home institution.

The Institut Pasteur-UCSF QBI Center based in UCSF is primarily focused on infectious diseases as well as disease-agnostic technologies and focuses more on the approach than a specific disease. This, therefore, opens the door to research on a wide array of topics, including, viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, mechanisms of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, epidemiology, modeling or any combination thereof.

This scholarship is an extraordinary opportunity to work with a unique Center based in San Francisco, to develop ideas and partnerships within a collaborative network, present works in progress and final results at domestic and global symposia, and formally build additional research skills. We are therefore thrilled to invite applications for this calendar year!

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

The length of this scholarship is six (6) months, and the scholar will get back as much as they put in. It is expected that the scholar will indicate her needed areas of growth and motivation towards the opportunities. The core components of this program are designed to meet the needs of each scholar:

• Round trip travel from country of residence to San Francisco, USA; visa fees; living stipend; shared housing for scholar; dedicated research and education funds, lab stipend (if needed). This fellowship does not provide support for additional family members.

• Strong research and career mentorship emphasizing the collaborative, multidisciplinary approach necessary to achieve impact in disease research and implementation within their home community upon return

• Academic, research, leadership training, and courses (if appropriate)

• Career development workshops offered in conjunction with the candidate’s research time-frame

• Assistance in grant writing to obtain funding for follow-up research in their home institution

ELIGIBILITY

Candidates are eligible if they have completed the following:

• PhD or MD equivalent

• Holding a permanent position at one of the member institutions of the Pasteur Network

• Previous work is focused on molecular biology, data analysis and/or biomedicine related to emerging infectious diseases

• English proficiency
