In June 2024, the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) and Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) convened in San Francisco for their second joint symposium, focused on integrative mechanistic biology. Co-organized by Nevan Krogan, Christian Freund, and Natalia Jura, the meeting marked a highly anticipated return to in-person collaboration following a five-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The atmosphere throughout the symposium reflected both excitement and momentum. Participants noted that the collaborative energy between QBI and FUB had only deepened over time, strengthened by sustained scientific exchange and a shared commitment to open, interdisciplinary research. Building on the foundation laid during their inaugural 2019 symposium in Berlin, the San Francisco meeting reignited a sense of collective purpose and highlighted the growing synergy between researchers across institutions and continents.
Discussions spanned a wide range of topics in integrative mechanistic biology, emphasizing the power of combining diverse expertise to tackle complex biological questions. The gathering also created space for reflection on the partnership’s evolution and future direction, reinforcing the importance of sustained international collaboration in advancing biomedical discovery.
A central outcome of the symposium was a renewed focus on developing strategic, long-term initiatives between QBI and FUB. Among these efforts was an application for an Einstein Visiting Fellowship, with Nevan Krogan nominated by Christian Freund, aimed at further deepening scientific exchange and collaborative research between the two institutions.
Together, the symposium underscored the strength of the QBI–FUB partnership and set the stage for continued collaboration, shared innovation, and impactful discovery in the years ahead.
